Silver City Recycles in Transition

After almost five years of service to our community, there are big changes ahead, yet we are uncertain as to what they will be.  We hope each one of you will work with us as we find our footing and continue our mission of diverting valuable waste from our landfill. Saturday, August 9, 2025, was our last drop-off.

Potential Cooperation with the Town of Silver City

We have demonstrated that recycling is possible here in town, and we would like the city to take on the responsibility because the city has the infrastructure and taxpayer funds that we do not.  Moreover, the city is eligible to receive grants for which nonprofit organizations are exempt.  A municipal recycling program would create jobs and divert much more material from the landfill.

We are the only volunteer recycling program in the state of New Mexico.

Call for Board Members!

We are interested in hearing new ideas and considering potential solutions from community members.  We would also love to bring two or three new people onto our board as we navigate these changes.  Do you have ideas for how we could improve?  Do you think you could donate your time at least four or five times a year to meet with the other board members for the benefit of the community and our land, present and future?

If you are interested in joining our board, please send an email to silvercitynmrecycles@gmail.com.  Type BOARD into the subject line.

If you have ideas for us, please send an email to silvercitynmrecycles@gmail.com, and type IDEAS into the subject line.

Meanwhile … What Do We Do With Our Recyclables?

Cardboard and Aluminum Cans

The cardboard roll-offs are no longer available in the parking lot near Tuesday Morning/the new Marshal’s store. But the main landfill at 318 Ridge Road accepts:

  • Corrugated cardboard (boxes flattened). No waxy cardboard, pizza boxes, cereal boxes, 12-pack soda boxes and similar paperboard materials
  • Aluminum and tin cans (separated)

You can check their hours at grantcountynm.gov/241/Solid-Waste

Plastic Bottles

The South Central Solid Waste Authority drop-off site at 2865 W Amador Avenue in Las Cruces accepts PET#1 and PET#2 (NOT PET#5).

For more information, check their website at scswa.net.
